As they descended the spiral staircase of blue obsidian, the air grew noticeably warmer. Banners bearing the crest of the constellation Lyra fluttered above the entrance to the Grand Arena. Thousands of spectators filled the amphitheater, their murmurs creating a low vibration that shook the flagstones. High above the arena floor, the High Council sat upon levitating pedestals carved from meteoric iron.

"Initiate Vesper of House Thorne," the herald's magically amplified voice echoed across the stadium. "Step forward to the Resonator."

The crowd fell into an expectant silence. Whispers rippled through the nobility. House Thorne was considered fallen—stripped of their lands during the War of Falling Stars twenty years ago. For a Thorne to stand among the final candidates for celestial ascension was viewed as either an outrage or an impossibility.

Vesper took a steadying breath and stepped into the circular glyph ring at the center of the sand.
