The Grand Celestial Observatory rose above the cloud-seas of Aethelgard like an ivory spear piercing the stratosphere. Vesper stood upon the highest balcony, the chilling dawn wind whipping her dark hair across violet-tinted eyes. In her hands, the Astral Codex hummed with a resonance that set her teeth on edge. It had been slumbering beneath the academy's vaulted library for three centuries, sealed in stasis runes that even Archmage Thaddeus could not unbind.

Yet last midnight, when Vesper brushed the dust from its celestial brass spine, the glyphs had dissolved into ribbons of starlight, absorbing directly into the skin of her wrists.

Down below in the courtyard, students draped in azure and silver robes were already congregating for the Vernal Trials. Whispers floated upward through the crystalline morning air. Everyone knew the stakes. Only the top three initiates would be granted entrance to the Upper Orbit, where the ancient star-forges still burned. The rest would be assigned to the Grounded Guard, patrolling the perimeter of the mortal realms against the creeping Void.
